Closed calls for applications

The CRTC uses a comparative selection model to allocate funds to successful applicants under the Broadband Fund. Here's how it works:

Since its launch in 2018, the Broadband Fund has held three calls for funding.

Third call for applications

Status: Closed

The third call for applications closed on June 15, 2023, and received over 100 applications. It was a targeted call, seeking applications for transport infrastructure projects, mobile wireless infrastructure projects that provide or upgrade mobile connectivity along major transportation roads, and projects that increase satellite transport capacity (operational costs only) across all eligible geographic areas throughout Canada. The CRTC approved approximately $473.4 million in funding across 23 funded projects.

Second call for applications

Status: Closed

The second call for applications closed on June 1, 2020, and received over 500 applications. It was open to all types of eligible projects across all eligible geographic areas throughout Canada. The CRTC approved approximately $194.6 million in funding across 40 funded projects.

First call for applications

Status: Closed

The first call for applications closed on October 3, 2019, and received 15 applications. It was a targeted call, seeking applications for projects in satellite-dependent communities in any area of Canada, or any eligible geographic area in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or Yukon. The CRTC approved approximately $103.1 million in funding across 5 funded projects.
